The Star Stitch
Beginning Star: Ch 3. Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Insert hook into next ch, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Insert hook into first st, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). Yo, pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to close star.
Star Stitch: Insert hook into ch-1 sp of star just made, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook). Insert hook into side of star, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook). Insert hook into st at base of star, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook). Insert hook into next st, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook). Yo, pull through all 6 loops. Ch 1 to close star.
sc 3rd Loop: to work into the 3rd Loop, work in the loop behind the top V of the indicated st.

This pattern is easy to customize for the perfect fit.
To adjust the circumference of the cover, simply add or remove chains from the beginning chain. Be sure to keep the total number of chains even so the stitch pattern lines up correctly.
To adjust the height of the cover, repeat Rounds 2–4 until the hat reaches your desired length.

Round 1: ch 21. sc in each st across until you have 1 st remaining, in the last st work 3 sc, working the other side of the beginning ch, 1 sc in each st across until you have 1 st remaining, in the last st work 2 sc, sl st to the top of the first st of the round. 42 sc
Tip: Place a stitch marker in the very last stitch to help identify the last stitch of the round.
Round 2: ch 1. 1 hdc next 20 sts. 3 hdc in the next st. 1 hdc in the next 20 sts. 3 hdc in the last st of the round. 48 hdc
Round 3: ch 1, sc in the 3rd loop each st around. Join with sl st to the first sc. 48 sc
Round 4: ch 3 Work first beg star st. Work star st around. Join with a sl st to the top of the first Star st. 24 Star sts
Round 5: ch 1, * 1 hdc in the top of the first Star st, 1 hdc in the ch-1 sp * repeat all the way around. sl st to the first hdc. 48 hdc
Round 6 -18: rep round 3-5
Round 19: ch 1, sc in the 3rd loop each st around. Join with sl st to the first sc. 48 sc
Round 20: ch 1, hdc each st around. Join with sl st to the first hdc. 48 hdc
Round 21: ch 1, sc next 11 sts, ch 12, in the 11th ch from the hook sl st, continue working sc sts around. Join with sls st to the first sc. 48 sc. Fasten off and weave in ends
Sew the button in the center front of round 20.
